Zion Lutheran Church celebrates it’s 200th anniversary on May 5th

April 10, 2013

Dear members and friends of Zion Lutheran Church,

Two hundred years ago next month the German families living around this part of the county (then Montgomery) met with two traveling ministers from North Carolina and decided to be organized as a Lutheran congregation and joined the North Carolina Conference.  In 1879 folks from Zion started the St. Mark congregation in Willis, and constructed the church building still in use.  Now the two congregations form the Floyd-Willis Lutheran Parish.

On Sunday, May 5, 2013, our Virginia Synod Bishop, James F. Mauney will preach here at Zion as we remember and celebrate our bicentennial as a joint worship with St. Mark.

We cordially invite you and your family to be a part of that day.  Our Pastor, Linda Motley, will lead the Service of Holy Communion and our choir and organist will bring special music.  The service begins at 10:30 a.m.  A catered lunch will be provided (no cost) to all who come.  A brief program on our history will follow lunch.  Descendants of charter families will be recognized.

We know that former pastor Crockett Huddle (1958-61) will be attending May 5th.  Also our preacher for Zion’s Homecoming, August 4, 2013 will be Pastor Paul Pingel (1993-2003). He is now pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Waynesboro, VA.  Former Pastor Kenneth Price (1956-57) now retired, will preach August 25, 2013 at St. Mark, Willis, Homecoming.  Both homecoming services begin at 10:30 a.m. and are followed by a potluck luncheon.

If you have any questions, please call either one of us.

In Christ’s Love,

Rev. Linda S. Mitchell Motley, Pastor, 745-2096
